Are You Neglecting Your Hormone Health?

Some days just feel off. Your stomach feels a little funny, your brain feels foggy, and even your coordination seems in decline.

But then there are still the good days when a walk in the sunshine clears your mind. You feel energized after feeding your body nutritious meals, and you feel like the amazing person you are. It could be that you finally got enough sleep. Or, more realistically, you finally got back into your healthy hormone routine.

From my perspective, as a Holistic Nutrition Coach and Food Scientist, I see these fluctuating patterns a lot when clients first come to me. Once you decide to prioritize your health (including your hormone health), you feel the positive effects. From your energy and good mood to just overall feeling healthy, those sneaky hormones can make a huge difference in your quality of life. And when you are feeling good, you can get back to crashing glass ceilings and achieving your demanding to-do list like the ambitious, go-getting woman you know you can be.

However, if you’ve been neglecting your hormones, then there is a good chance they’re out of whack. Moreover, the symptoms are all over the place, so it may be difficult to pinpoint. That’s why I’m giving you the 5 signs of neglected hormones to help you put your health top-of-mind once again.

5 Signs Your Hormones Are Out Of Whack

Your endocrine system produces your hormones, affecting a range of physiological functions throughout your body. The hormones themselves are managed by your pituitary, thyroid, and adrenal glands, as well as your ovaries. A few of your body's functions, whose health relies on your hormones include metabolism, reproductivity, mood regulation, weight, and more.

So it’s safe to say that out-of-whack hormones can definitely lead to the no-good days where you just feel off. And we’re all aware that as we age into midlife, the not-so-good days are more common than the fantastic ones. So why not do what we can to make those good days more abundant?!

1. The Scale Feels Like It’s Mocking You

Have you put on weight that you just can’t seem to get rid of? As women our age enter midlife and perimenopause, our hormones can surprise us with extra pounds that are harder and harder to eliminate. Even worse? It mainly happens around the belly. Ughhh!

However, fluctuating weight, and weight gain in itself, can be a sign of an underlying hormone issue. It’s important to realize that fad diets may not be allowing your body to receive enough nutrients. I see this ALL THE TIME!

Rather than buy the next book and cut out everything you love to eat, take a step back. Are you getting protein, healthy fats, vitamins, minerals, and all the right nutrients? Unfortunately, most fad diets cut these out in a desperate attempt to cut calories. And as a result, you are doing your body a disservice.

Blow off the mocking scale and focus on eating real, whole, and natural foods. Not only will you feel your energy increase, but you’ll be helping your hormones get back in line. If time or recipe ideas are an issue, check out my website for delicious and nutritious recipes.

2. You Are Tired All Day & Can’t Sleep At Night

Sleepless nights along with night sweats are red flags that your hormones are out of whack. Then, the inevitable daylight comes, and you just can’t muster the energy to go through your days like the badass you are. Something’s gotta give.

Sometimes, reflecting after a stressful day can make it so hard to fall asleep at night. But if you are experiencing sleepless nights regularly, that may be a sign of upset hormones. Furthermore, insomnia can lead to even more health issues like high blood pressure and heart disease.

It’s important to address your hormone health when your sleep routine feels like an uphill battle. Help set your body’s circadian rhythm by treating yourself to an amazing bedtime routine. Invest in blackout curtains, the comfiest pajamas, and face wash and serums that feel like a dream.

And here’s the important part – go to bed and wake up at the same time every day and be mindful of screentime. Make the choice to stop looking at screens (yes – especially your phone) 1-2 hours before bedtime. And, yes, even on the weekends. This will help you get back into a routine so you can finally count on having good rest to get you through even the busiest of days.

3. It’s Getting Harder & Harder To Focus

It can be sooo hard to focus when your hormones aren’t functioning properly. Yes, sometimes you might just be having a bad day. Whether you didn’t get enough sleep, feel the stress of your demanding career, or are dealing with everyday life – it can be a lot.

However, if those days of not being able to concentrate are a regular thing, there’s probably something bigger at play. And there’s a good chance it’s your hormones. It’s so important to find ways to handle stress, so it doesn’t impede your ambitious goals.

If you can’t concentrate, look at your lifestyle. Are you getting exercise? No, I don’t mean hitting the gym for an hour every day. Exercise can be quick walks between meetings, short online workout videos, or just dancing through your household chores.

Additionally, look at your diet, mindset, sleep patterns, and overall daily routine. It’s easy to fall into a rut. What’s important is to recognize what needs to change. My program works for successful women like you because we integrate gradual changes that are attainable. I know you don’t have time to make major changes to your already busy life. That’s why I’ll work with you to find a system that you can stick to so you can feel like your best self again.

4. You Are Experiencing Mood Swings & Losing All Patience

People are the worst! Well, maybe it seems that way if you are in a bad mood. If you are feeling annoyed at your family, friends, and co-workers, there may be something bigger happening inside yourself. Things that normally don’t bother you are just infuriating, and it takes everything not to fly off the handle. We’ve all been there.

However, if you have no more patience for even the most measly problems, it’s time to look inside yourself. As a rule of thumb, if you start feeling like everyone around you is the problem – the problem is likely you. Not to say you should feel shame in this. Mood swings can come from a physiological place, and it’s a sign to prioritize your hormone health.

Take a break, catch your breath, go for a walk, and think about the things in life for which you are grateful. Then set yourself up for a good mood reboot.

I can help you start feeling yourself again by re-focusing your routine on hormone healthy foods and habits. Enjoy your family, friends, and work besties without them tiptoeing around your mood swings. Book a discovery call with me to get started.

5. Self-Care Has Gone Out The Window

Make a list of your favorite forms of self-care. Now, read through the list and think about the last time you actually put any of these activities to practice.

Maybe your luxury bubble bath has sat unused for far too long. Your favorite manicurist misses you. The book you couldn’t wait to read is collecting dust. Or the garden you couldn’t wait to plant looks more like a wild jungle.

While self-care looks different to each person, neglecting the things that bring you joy may be a sign of unhealthy hormones. Do you just not have the energy, time, or patience? If you are reading this and thinking, “Uh-huh, yep, ohhh that’s me!” then we should talk.
